If you are locked out of a San Diego apartment, try building management first. Call a licensed locksmith if they cannot help or will not answer. Do not force the door. Have ID and a lease page ready.

Swift Key San Diego is a referral service. It does not open doors or set lockout fees. Independent locksmiths quote and collect. Call (858) 400-4082.

First moves

Call the leasing office during hours. Many UTC towers and Pacific Beach buildings have a master-key protocol. Check the lease for a lockout fee before you assume it is free.

If the office is closed, look for a separate after-hours number. It is often not on the office voicemail. Try the property-management corporate line, courtesy patrol, concierge, or a neighbor who knows the real on-call number.

If none of that works in a reasonable wait, call a locksmith. Hiring one to enter your own unit is not, by itself, a standard lease breach. They still have to verify you belong there.

Do not let a stranger “who knows a guy” slip the latch. Damage is on you.

After hours

Saturday night lockouts from Coronado to Oceanside are common. After-hours building lines are often for floods, not lockouts. Then an emergency locksmith is the practical call. How locksmiths open doors: non-destructive entry.

What the locksmith will do

They should ask location, lock type if you know it, and how you got locked out. Most apartment cylinders can be picked. If they must drill, they should explain and quote a cylinder before they destroy this one.

They quote. You pay them. Swift Key does not. Pricing hygiene: locksmith cost in San Diego.

Proof of residency

Have one or more of:

  • Government ID
  • Lease with your name and unit
  • Recent utility bill at that address

New move to Little Italy or Bankers Hill: ID plus lease is the usual pair even if the ID is still the old address. Building staff who will vouch can help. License lookup: search.dca.ca.gov.

Roommate moved out, or you just moved in

Returned keys do not prove there are no copies. Ask the manager before any rekey. Many complexes sit on a master and want the new key. Move-in decision: rekey versus replace. Tenant lock-change statutes: tenant rekey rights.

County

Same referral model Downtown, Gaslamp, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, SDSU-area rentals, Chula Vista, El Cajon, Encinitas. House lockouts: home lockout. After-hours framing: when you need after-hours help. Central complexes: Mission Valley locksmith guide.

Frequently asked questions

Who do I call first?

Leasing office or manager during hours. After hours, the emergency number in the lease. Then a locksmith.

Can my landlord let me in?

Yes, with a master, when they answer. Any after-hours fee is in the lease, not on this page.

How much does an apartment lockout cost?

The locksmith’s itemized quote. Time, pick versus drill, hardware, and drive all move it.

How long until someone arrives?

Depends who accepts the job and where you are. Downtown and North Park are different from Otay Ranch or Rancho Bernardo. No minute promise.

Will my landlord know?

Not automatically. If they drilled the cylinder, you generally need to tell management so the hardware can be restored.

My ID still shows the old address.

Lease plus photo ID is the usual package.
