BMW key replacement in San Diego is not one job. BMW has used several immobilizer generations. Some are a mobile locksmith task. Some are dealer-only. The quote follows the generation, not a single luxury-car average.
Swift Key San Diego is a referral service. An independent locksmith confirms tool coverage from VIN and build date, then sets the price. Call (858) 400-4082.
BMW key types by era
| Era | Key type | Immobilizer | Programming notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-2001 (E36, E38, early E46) | Basic transponder | EWS II | Widely supported on locksmith tools |
| 2001-2010 (late E46, E90, E60, X5 E53/E70) | Remote / diamond key | EWS III, CAS1/2 | Often mobile if the shop has BMW software |
| 2011-2017 (F30, F10, F15) | Comfort Access smart fob | CAS3+, CAS4 | Needs specialized hardware; not every shop |
| 2018+ (G20, G30, G05 and newer) | Smart fob / Digital Key | FEM, BDC, BRICS | Frequently dealer authorization |
Towing is a dealer all-keys-lost extra when the car cannot be driven in.
Why BMW is more involved
Older cars use EWS. Later cars use CAS, then FEM or BDC on G-series. Each module holds cryptographic material that must stay in sync with the ECU and the key.
On many brands a locksmith programs through OBD. BMW all-keys-lost jobs sometimes require reading the module itself, not only the dash port.
CAS4 and FEM (roughly 2011 onward, then G-series) use stronger encryption. Programming may need ISTA or high-end aftermarket tools. A general automotive locksmith may not carry them. Ask before the visit.
Comfort Access adds an LF antenna in the fob that must initialize separately from the transponder. Two programming steps.
When the dealer is the right call
- All keys lost on many 2018+ G-series cars. FEM/BDC often needs dealer programming. Some keys are ordered VIN-coded and take days.
- CPO or a service plan that actually covers the key.
- Digital Key (phone as key via NFC) on 2019+ models. That is provisioned through My BMW and BMW servers.
A locksmith who promises a 2022 3 Series all-keys-lost job without checking VIN and build date is guessing.
When a locksmith often wins
EWS and CAS1 through CAS3+ with the right tools: work in the driveway, no tow. Adding a spare while one key still works does not usually need dealer authorization on those platforms.
All keys lost
Ownership documents come first. The locksmith or dealer should tell you whether the module can be accessed on site or the car must go to the BMW store. Do not assume every BMW is like a Camry.
Frequently asked questions
How much does BMW key replacement cost in San Diego?
It tracks immobilizer generation and whether any key still works. The locksmith or dealer quotes. Swift Key does not publish dollar ranges.
Can any locksmith program a BMW?
No. Ask which BMW modules they support. G-series all-keys-lost is often dealer territory.
Does Comfort Access change the job?
Yes. Extra antenna initialization. The locksmith needs software that includes it.
