Swift Key San Diego is a referral service. We match San Diego County homeowners with licensed independent locksmiths. We do not perform locksmith work, employ technicians, or set a price. You contract with that locksmith directly.
A home lockout is one job among several. The useful decision is which residential task you actually need: rekey, repair, replacement, duplication, or a smart lock, then how to hire the person who quotes it.
Jobs an independent residential locksmith may quote
Independent locksmiths in San Diego County handle residential hardware. The matched professional inspects and quotes. Swift Key does not.
- Lockouts and broken keys. Getting back in after keys are lost, stolen, or locked inside. If a key snaps in the cylinder, leave the fragment in place. Digging with pliers can push it deeper. See broken key extraction.
- Deadbolts and other hardware. Deadbolt installation, gate locks, and sliding-door hardware when that locksmith’s work covers them. Ask what grade and brand they will install. Do not treat any grade as a guaranteed highest protection.
- Repair versus replace. Sticky keys, misaligned latches, and worn cylinders. The locksmith decides whether the hardware can be serviced or needs lock replacement.
- Rekey and keys. Lock rekey keeps the hardware and changes which keys work. Duplication and master-key layouts are separate quotes.
- Specialty hardware. Mailboxes, cabinets, safes, and garage locks when that locksmith’s tools cover them.
- Smart locks. Smart lock installation is a fit-and-app job. The locksmith checks the door prep and the setup you care about. They do not promise a network result from the truck.
Rekey versus replace
When you move in, you may not know who still has a working copy. A rekey changes the pins in the existing cylinders. Old keys stop working. You get new keys. Compare that path with a full replacement on the same visit. Read rekeying vs. replacing locks when you move in.
When rekey is the usual question
Ask for a lock rekey quote when:
- You just moved into a house or apartment.
- You lost a set of keys.
- A roommate, tenant, or contractor no longer needs access.
- You want one key that works the exterior doors that already share a compatible keyway.
When replacement is the usual question
Ask for lock replacement when:
- The hardware is rusted, cracked, or loose in the door.
- You want a different lock type than what is on the door now.
- The cylinder will not turn even with a good key.
- You are changing finishes or door prep as part of other work.
High-security cylinders and restricted keyways are product choices. Ask the locksmith what that model lists for pick, drill, and copy control. Do not treat a brand name as immunity.
Smart locks and spare keys
Smart locks can add a code, app, or fob path. They still need a door that latches and a bolt that throws. Ask the matched locksmith to check alignment, then walk through the app with you. We connect you for smart lock installation. We do not install.
Hardware-store kiosks can copy a simple key. Worn originals and restricted blanks are a different job. A locksmith can say whether they will cut from the original, from a code, or not at all. Compare paths in locksmith vs. hardware store key duplication.
What you can try versus when to stop
If a lock is only a little sticky, check that the lockset and strike screws are snug. Loose hardware can throw the latch off the strike. If the key is hard to turn, graphite or a PTFE lock lubricant in the keyway is the usual first try. Never use a wet lubricant like WD-40. It holds dust and can gum the pins.
Stop and call for a licensed locksmith if:
- A key breaks in the lock. Leave the fragment. Do not fish unless a stub is clearly gripable and you can pull it straight. Pushing it in is the usual way this becomes a cylinder swap.
- The cylinder spins with the key. That is an internal failure. Do not keep turning it.
- The deadbolt will not fully throw or retract. Describe which side of the door and whether the door is open or closed. The locksmith inspects before they adjust or replace. They should not promise a no-damage result from the phone.
- You see pry marks or a bent cylinder. Ask for an inspection and a written scope. Replacement may be part of that scope.
How to hire: license first, then a written scope
California locksmith work is regulated by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), not the contractors board. Ask for the locksmith company license (LCO). Check the company at search.dca.ca.gov.
A license lookup is not proof of insurance. If insurance matters to you, ask that locksmith for their current certificate. Do not treat a DCA search as coverage.
Ask who will do the work. You want a licensed independent locksmith you can name, not an unnamed dispatcher. Swift Key is a referral service. We match you. We do not hold a locksmith license or send our own technicians.
Ask for a written quote before work starts: trip, labor, and hardware as separate lines. The final number can change if the inspection finds a different failure. That change should be stated before extra work. For a broader cost conversation, see locksmith costs in San Diego. That sibling is not a price list for this page.
Ask for ID and the LCO on site. Professional tools and a marked vehicle help you confirm you hired the person you checked. They do not replace the license lookup.
Frequently asked questions
What residential jobs do homeowners usually need quoted?
Common asks are a lockout, a rekey after a move-in, a stuck deadbolt, and a spare key. We do not rank which call is most frequent. If you just moved, ask whether a lock rekey covers every exterior cylinder you care about.
How much does it cost to rekey a house in San Diego?
The locksmith quotes per cylinder, plus a trip if they have to roll. Ask them to compare rekey versus replacement on the same visit. Swift Key does not publish ranges.
Can a locksmith install a smart lock on any door?
Not every door prep matches every lock. The main variable is the existing bore, backset, and strike. A smart lock installation visit should include a fit check, app setup, and a test of each entry method you were sold. The locksmith confirms that on site.
How do I know if my San Diego home needs a lock replacement or just a repair?
If the lock is stiff but still works, lubrication or a rekey is often the first quote. If the hardware is cracked, loose in the door, or will not throw, ask for replacement as a second line. Coastal salt is a setting in beach cities. It is not a published wear rate. The locksmith inspects the actual cylinder.
Is it safe to use a hardware store kiosk for key copies?
A kiosk can be enough for a low-stakes padlock or shed. For an exterior door, ask a locksmith whether they will cut to the original or to a code. Worn keys copy poorly when the machine traces the wear.
